The Process

Meghan soaking the fabric in a mordant bath of alum

Step 1.

First, we soak the fabric in a mordant bath of alum overnight to help the color last longer and look brighter and more vibrant. We use large storage tubs to ensure that the fabric can move around freely in the mordant bath.

Step 2.

Next, we create a dye bath in a large stockpot on a hot plate with plant material, similar to making tea. Then, we add the prepared fabric to the dye bath; stirring frequently to ensure even color distribution. We typically leave fabric in the dye bath overnight.

Step 3.

Next, we wash the dyed fabric and hang it to dry. Once the fabric is dried we can press it and then sew it into the final piece with great attention to detail. Finally, we add a hang tag to the finished piece. We stamp the dye material on each tag so you know what gave the piece its gorgeous color!
